The Latest Fundraising - Where the Money Went

Good News! On 18th and 19th October 2009, REACT successfully completed a delivery of books to the refugee camps of Eastern Chad. These were 2220 books which REACT was able to procure thanks to our supporters’ donations and fundraising during the last August Triathlon event. So a HUGE thank you for the generous help!! Your donation makes a real difference in the refugees’ life and each penny goes directly into procuring the books.

1576 books were distributed in Am Nabak and 644 books in Touloum as planned by REACT in consultation with the schools. Last year REACT personally met the education inspectors, head-teachers and teachers in each camp to conduct a survey and this distribution reflects the needs identified by the teachers during that visit.

The teachers were extremely happy with this latest distribution and much appreciated the quality of the books which was considered to be higher than other donations. However, we were reminded by the teachers of the need for many more books to follow, since the number delivered can only cover a small part of the camps’ students.

REACT is committed to continue sending more books, and hope to increase the number of books donated with each delivery.

REACT enters the Mazda London Triathlon 2009!

REACT is now an official charity in the Mazda London Triathlon this August 2009!

Our enthusiastic supporters are all geared up to take part and raise money to support the Books project for the Darfuri refugees.

REACT at the Royal Ballet School

REACT was delighted to be invited by the Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park to give a presentation to its students about the Darfur Book project with a view to build a link with the refugee schools in Eastern Chad.

REACT used pictures and video clips of its previous visits to the region to show what life is like in a refugee camp and to bring home messages from refugees about the importance of education in their future.

REACT links up with Schools and Universities

UNESCO Associated Schools and the UN Association of the UK have partnered with REACT to bring to UK Schools and Univerities a unique opportunity to learn more about life in a refugee camp. The aim is to help support refugee students and their right to continue their education during their displacement.

Schools, Universities and other community groups will be given an opportunity to engage with student refugees and their teachers, by opening a channel of communication and dialogue. This is something the refugees have specifically requested. The UK Schools and Universities will hopefully also be fundraising for textbooks to be sent to Darfuri students. REACT spoke at Warwick University and the students there have kindly supported REACT. Forthcoming speaking and fundraising events include St James School in West London and the Royal Ballet School.

REACT visits Khartoum

REACT Director, Giovanna Stopponi, travelled to Khartoum, Sudan, to meet with local partners and firm up plans for our expanding 2009 activities.

Despite the imminent celebrations for the end of Ramadan, REACT had successful meetings with important partners and education specialists. Partners agreed to a long-term collaboration with REACT to implement the Books Project in the refugee camps.

REACT mission along Sudan - Chad Border

In May 2008 REACT travelled to the refugee camps along the Chadian - Sudanese border. The team met with refugees headteachers, NGOs and the UNHCR spending considerable time in the refugee camp schools, ascertaining from the teachers and pupils their specific needs. REACT was able to verify the impact its textbooks donations have on the education of the children.

The textbooks donated by REACT were able to benefit directly 1350 children of one school in one camp and indirectly more children of other schools where these books are loaned on a rota basis. Without the books delivered by REACT, the children would still be sharing one book among a dozen children. Now the gap now is nearer to the international humanitarian standard of one book between 3 children. This makes it easier for the children to study at home on their own book at least twice a week.

St James Schools for Girls in London is first to partner with Darfuri refugee children in Chad.

St James School for Girls in Kensington Olympia, London, has dedicated this year’s school play of Midsummer Night’s Dream to fundraise for REACT’s books project for the Darfuri refugees in Chad.On 15th November 2007, St James’ girls raised £2,000 through their amazing and witty performance and remarkable enthusiasm to help their peers from Darfur.Visit St James’ Schools.

£ 2,000 pounds can buy 1,800 books from Khartoum’s Ministry of Education and provides refugee students and teachers with essential tools to access education. Find out more about REACT Current Projects.

1,000 refugee children received textbooks on Eid day - 12th October 2007

On Eid day, on Friday 12th October 2007, more than 1,000 Darfuri children aged 5 to 14 woke up to a nice surprise and double celebration in the refugee camp of Am Nabak, Chad. More than 1,200 books were delivered to them that day thanks to REACT, the support of the British Council and UNHCR/WFP.Go to Current Projects.
